France’s toll booths are disappearing and that’s good news

If you’ve driven on France’s motorways recently, you may have noticed fewer traditional toll booths and more sleek overhead gantries. This is part of a nationwide shift towards free-flow tolling – a system that lets drivers pay without stopping.
The goal? Smoother traffic, shorter travel times, and a safer, more efficient driving experience.
Why toll booths are being removed
For decades, toll booths have been the standard way to collect motorway fees in France. But they’ve also been a cause of congestion, forcing drivers to slow down, merge into fewer lanes, and in many cases, come to a complete stop.
Free-flow tolling solves these problems. Instead of physical gates, the system uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and electronic sensors to record a vehicle’s passage. The toll is then billed automatically through a pre-registered account or online payment.
Benefits for drivers
- Smoother traffic flow – no more queues at toll plazas
- Reduced travel time – especially on long motorway journeys
- Lower emissions – fewer stops mean less fuel consumption
- Improved safety – fewer sudden stops and lane changes
Where this is already happening
The A79 motorway in central france is one of the first to fully adopt free-flow tolling. Drivers pass under the gantries without slowing down, and the system is expected to be rolled out on more major routes in the coming years.
How to pay tolls in France
Even though traditional toll gates still exist on many routes, you now have multiple payment options. These methods also work with the new free-flow system.
Télépéage (liber-t electronic tag)
A small transponder attached to your windscreen automatically communicates with toll systems. With liber-t, you can drive through the orange “t” lanes without stopping. It’s ideal for regular motorway users.
Credit or debit card
Most toll points accept cards, including contactless for smaller amounts. In free-flow areas, you can register your card online so charges are made automatically when your plate is detected.
Cash
Still available at many traditional booths, but will gradually disappear as free-flow tolling becomes more common.
Online payment after your trip
On motorways like the A79, you can pay online within a set period after your journey. Just enter your licence plate number on the official payment site.
Prepaid or subscription accounts
Frequent drivers can link a prepaid account to their vehicle registration, ensuring seamless automatic billing.
The road ahead
The disappearance of toll booths in France isn’t just a tech upgrade – it’s a transformation in how we travel. By removing bottlenecks, the system improves efficiency, reduces stress, and makes long drives more enjoyable.
As free-flow tolling expands, France’s motorways will become faster, cleaner, and more convenient – letting drivers focus on the road ahead, not on the next stop.
